Join us on the Wiley Roots patio for live music from Jake Bergstrom, 7-9 pm!
Jake Bergstrom was born and raised in the countryside near Lebo, Kansas. His first experiences with a guitar were on the dusty ol’ Harmony acoustic his father kept in the corner. As he was growing up, the burgeoning opry scene in the area provided him with a great guitar teacher named Rick McClintic, as well as a steady source for performance opportunities. Jake celebrated his 12th birthday by being hired as the in-house lead guitarist at the “Grand O(ttawa) Opry,” and within a year he recorded a cassette tape, “Jake Bergstrom ‘Country Guitarist’.” Throughout high school, Jake continued to perform in the local country opry scene, including the Council Grove Opry, the Ft. Scott Jubilee, and the Main Street Opry, among others. He also played semi-regularly with a local band named “The Gravel Road Band” while studying informally with their guitarist, Robert Williamson. During this time Jake shared the stage with such country artists as Eddie Rabbit, Hank Thompson, Cal Smith, Junior Brown, Jack Greene, Ty England and Rascal Flatts. He also performed in several acoustic rock duos, including with singer/songwriters David Oakleaf and Eric Murphy.
Throughout his college years, Jake continued to perform in a variety of bands. He was the lead guitarist of a country dance band named “Prairie Fire” and a rock band named “Driven,” among a host of others. While working on a psychology degree at Emporia State University (ESU) in Emporia, Kansas, he had the opportunity to perform at the University of North Texas Jazz Festival with the ESU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Gary Ziek. During this time he studied with Dr. Bob McCurdy (jazz improv), Dr. Tracy Freeze (percussion) and Dr. Jeff Hodapp (bass guitar). Jake also studied informally with local musicians Don Kile and Vic Rodriguez. Upon completing his psychology degree, Jake moved to Greeley, Colorado to obtain a 2nd bachelors degree from the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) in jazz studies. At UNC he studied with guitarists Matt Fuller and Steve Kovalcheck. During this time he had the opportunity to perform with jazz musicians Benny Green, Jeff Coffin, Terell Stafford and Donny McCaslin, among others. Jake played with the DownBeat Award-winning UNC Jazz Lab 1 Big Band, cumulating with performances at the Telluride Jazz Festival.
In recent years, Jake has primarily focused his musical efforts on performing unaccompanied acoustic guitar. Influences for this particular endeavor include: Big Bill Broonzy, John Fahey, Duane Allman, Tommy Emmanuel, and others.
